Field Trip to Calvin's Nature Preserve

What a beautiful day for learning in the woods!

Our Calvin student guides gave us magnifying glasses
to help us see what nature was hiding.

We discovered insects building homes for the winter...

And how the rays of sun can beam down to light the way.

We observed painted turtles...

And evidence of animal homes.

We loved learning from our living textbook this morning.
Thanks to all the Calvin College students for guiding us!

Welcome Melissa Stewart!

Children's author Melissa Stewart arrived
at Wealthy Elementary School on Monday morning.
After a wonderful first day, we decided to show her
one of Michigan's finest treasures - Lake Michigan.
She was amazed at the size and compared the sand to her own Cape Cod.

Mrs. Stewart spent all week at Wealthy sharing her writing techniques
and inspirations with each grade level.  Today, it was our turn!
Here she is reminding us how our text and illustrations must
match in order to deliver the greatest amount of information to the reader.

We loved our time with Mrs. Stewart and look forward to
reading more and more of her titles!

Apple Pizza Day

We began our apple pizza recipe by chopping apples,

                                                                 ......and more apples,
 and more apples.
It was a lot of fun!
We were so happy to have
Mrs. Lowe and Mrs. Saltsman
helping this morning!!

Then we combined the topping and
sprinkled it on top of the apples.
Popped it in a 450 degree oven for 18 minutes and then...
the whole school was asking
"what is that wonderful smell
 coming from the kitchen??"
We made four pizzas to share
with our reading buddies and teaching staff - yum!!

Apple Orchard and PumpkinTime!

What a beautiful sunny day to meet in the apple orchard.
The Steffens' family treated us to several activities
including a ride through the orchard to view the several varieties of apples.

We watched people picking apples from the tops of tall ladders
and then place the apples in bins.
Farmer Rob told us that one day he had a worker pick
21 bins all by himself - wow!

We stopped to taste Jonanthan apples
before continuing our trip to the pumpkin patch.

 Everyone was able to select
their very own pumpkin to take home
- so many to choose from!
Outdoor learning makes memories
that will last a lifetime - thanks Steffens' Orchard!
